Weekend of Losers

The surprise box office winner this weekend, well maybe not that surprising, was a relaunch of the two Toy Story movies in 3D, which came in at 3rd place proving that 3D movies might have an audience after all, so long as they start out as popular 3D movies first. The expected launches meanwhile fell flat. Invention of Lying opened 5th with 7 million. This raises the not altogether shocking possibility that Ricky Gervais is not who you want headlining a motion picture. Promos that made the movie look particularly stupid, sex coupon comes to mind, probably didn’t help. Whip It, which should have cashed in on the girl power, instead bombed coming in 6th with less than 5 million even. Capitalism A Love Story was supposed to show some muscle, instead it crumbled in 8th place with under 5 million dollars too. Of course the per theater averages were better than for Lying or Whip It, but in the case of Lying, not by all that much. Meanwhile Soderbergh continues his trend of making movies no one wants to see with The Informant, all set to slip out of the top 10 next week, while taking in barely 30 million despite starring Matt Damon. That’s where Tyler Perry already is. So much for staying power.
