Letterman Again Finds a Way to Get Ratings

Letterman’s sex and blackmail scandal, not exactly two words anyone ever expected to hear in the same sentence with the name Letterman. And his ratings of course have gone up, and not just among the usual geezers who sit through his aimless rantings night after night. This is about the only way Letterman has ever gotten ratings bumps, by creating some personal drama in his life, whether it’s playing up his heart bypass or turning his sleazy sexual harassment of interns followed by blackmail into a multi-night event. Nobody watches Letterman because he’s funny. He’s not. Letterman’s comedy is really stoner comedy without the label. Letterman imagining that mispronouncing names, giggling at random and sending people around in bunny suits is comedy, when it’s actually the sort of thing stoned people create on YouTube thinking it’s funny. CBS got a bad bargain with Letterman. First it lost to Leno, who wasn’t funny either, but unlike Letterman at least tried to make the effort. Now Letterman is up against Conan who can easily steal away Letterman’s demographics. So being blackmailed for 2 million might have been the best thing to happen to him… for a week or so anyway.
