Help, I’m a Big Fat White Guy and I Hate Capitalism!

Also known as the Michael Moore story, please. First of all Moore’s documentaries, if they can even be called that, have more in common with episodes of his TV Nation show than they do with Roger and Me. And their entertainment factor has shrunk in each iteration. But Moore’s worst luck with Capitalism A Love Story is bad timing. If McCain had won in ‘08, Michael Moore’s latest big screen TV Nation episode would have passed muster, as it is it’s basically a rant about Reagan and Bush, while the Dems are in office. This is a practical approach when it comes to mainstream democrats who don’t want to see a movie slamming Clinton and Obama, but it’s dishonest and alienates fellow progressives. Capitalism a Love Story was meant to be the economic version of Farenheit 911, but it fails badly because Moore’s usual routine is overexposed and because his target audience really isn’t in the mood to be ranted at, especially about people who are now out of office. And there’s an uncomfortable hypocrisy in making a movie bashing capitalism, by a guy who’s kind of a huge capitalist himself. Moore could safely take on GM or HMO’s or the NRA, without being accused of hypocrisy, because he doesn’t own a car company or an HMO or a gun. But if capitalism is a sin, then it’s one that he and his corporate partners are equally guilty of.
