Big Bang Theory Loses the Equation

Sitcoms are actually deceptively simple things. One of the most common elements in a sitcom is the unfulfilled relationship, in which one or two characters have an unfulfilled relationship. And the easiest way to kill a sitcom is to fulfill that relationship. And yes that even applies to non-sitcom sitcoms like The Office. An unfulfilled relationship creates tension, and while it’s often there as cross-demographic programming for half hour shows that traditionally underperform among women, its dramatic strength comes from keeping the would be lovers at bay. Once the relationship happens, the show dies. The examples of that are too many to list, but the bottom line is that a fulfilled relationship kills the dynamic. Big Bang Theory which made the mistake of giving in to the inevitable and improbable, wrecked the dynamic. And the last two episodes so far featured the two offensive ethnic stereotypes being cut adrift to find their own better and funnier adventures, while Sheldon, Leonard and Penny put on their own version of a domestic sitcom. It of course doesn’t work and it’s not funny. And since Big Bang Theory’s dynamic and characters are a carbon copy of Frasier, they could have just looked at what happened when Niles finally ended up with Daphne.
