Jimmy Fallon to Replace Conan O’Brien

In news that should make any of us long for the Dana Carvey Show, apparently Jimmy Fallon is set to replace Conan O’Brien, with the goal of making late night NBC the most unwatchable few hours of television since Ricki Lake gave birth live on the air to a beautiful baby Martian.

Jimmy Fallon makes sense as a practical choice. He’s in the NBC family, he’s one of the few newer SNL cast members anyone knows and he has absolutely no talent whatsoever. Zero. Zip. Nada. It really takes someone special to make Adam Sandler look like Jimmy Stewart but Jimmy Fallon is it and unlike Conan he’s no writer either, which means whoever still watches late night TV will have to endure a lot of awkward moments and begging for laughs.

NBC has really outdone themselves. Even as Conan lost out for the first time to Craig Ferguson for the first time, NBC is going ahead with giving Leno the heave ho and moving Conan into his place and then following it up with Jimmy Fallon. I don’t think we’ve seen a late night lineup this unappealing since Letterman and Tom Snyder. At this point the door is open for someone to snatch up Leno or any ordinary guy comic and challenge NBC, but why would they bother. Late Night is expensive and on its last legs anyway.
